From Expert to Leader for a Global Mining Company
First Quantum Minerals is global copper mining company, employing over 20,000 people. Amongst their employees are technical experts – in geology, metallurgy, engineering, construction and complex mine operation. Having worked with First Quantum for several years, we were asked by their Exploration Group to support the development of a group of regional leaders – high achieving technical experts (Geologists) make the transition to be exceptional leaders.
What we did
We delivered a 9 month programme bringing together this group of 10 leaders from across the world. Each leader had a tailored development programme, supported by individual coaching and specific content, and 2 x 2 day ‘bootcamps’ with the whole group in London. The programme focused on developing leadership capability in leading individuals, creating high performing teams and enabling high performance cultures.
The impact
Through the programme, leaders reported increasing the frequency of coaching and development conversations (by 48%), and developed their confidence and skill in having performance and feedback conversations with their teams (by 53%). They also reported that they felt more connected as a leadership community and were actively collaborating and sharing learning (an increase of 67%).
The Exploration group invested in extending the programme to the next level down (district leaders), and providing ongoing support to the original group.
